  1. Everything except the human poop if you plan on using the compost to grow veggies which is the only reason I can think of for taking the time to compost.

A compost pile should never include fats or oils. In addition, do not use pet or human excrement, which according to the site below may have viruses and/or parasites that require higher and more prolonged temperatures than what you can get in your compost heap.

You’ll need to scroll down to the “materials to avoid”

  3. You start with a little dirt and you can add produce and if animal manuer can be composted, I suppose human feces you could too. I’d avoid adding anything sweet. You’ll get a bad infestation of ants. Basically for composting you just want to do old produce and scraps, egg shells, coffee and tea grounds and have some earth worms handy and keep it moist and warm.

The dirt, mud (which is just wet dirt), human fecal matter (poop), sugar, and cooking spices are all OK. However, I would try to stay away from the corn syrup, maple syrup, tooth paste, baking soda, and baking powder. You want things that would decompose (break down) rather easily. You also don’t want any chemicals left over after the items break down. I would stick with vegetable matter. Things like banana peels, apple skins, potato skins, any part of the fruit or vegetable that you are not going to eat, any fruit that spoils before you get the chance to eat it, any yard clippings, and fallen leaves and sticks from when you rake the yard.
